SEC Launched 80% More Crypto Enforcement Actions Under Gensler’s Leadership

Recent reports indicate that under Gary Gensler’s leadership, the SEC has initiated 125 crypto-related enforcement actions from April 2021 to December 2024, marking an 80% increase compared to the 70 actions under his predecessor, Jay Clayton, between 2017 and 2020. The enforcement actions under Gensler resulted in record-breaking penalties totaling $6.05 billion, nearly quadrupling the $1.52 billion imposed during Clayton’s tenure. The report also notes a 30% decline in crypto-related enforcement actions in 2024 compared to the peak in 2023, marking the first year-over-year drop.
